Andrea L. Guzman was a guest in Bremen as a visiting researcher in November 2025.

Prof. Andrea L. Guzman is a professor of communication at Northern Illinois University (USA). Her research examines how people conceptualise and interact with communicative AI, and the social and ethical implications of these technologies. She has been instrumental in establishing Human-Machine Communication (HMC) as a distinct subfield of communication studies and in building its international network. Her publications include the SAGE Handbook of Human-Machine Communication and Human-Machine Communication: Rethinking Communication, Technology, and Ourselves; a co-authored book on voice assistants is forthcoming with Polity.

During her stay at ZeMKI she worked on “AI ecosystems” and the integration of communicative AI into everyday life, collaborating with ZeMKI members Andreas Hepp, Christian Katzenbach and Andreas Breiter. In her ComAI Lecture, “The Collective Consequences of AI Across Media Industries,” she argued for looking beyond individual sectors such as journalism, PR and advertising to examine AI’s collective consequences for media work as a whole.
