From July 21 to 24, 2026, the ACM Conference on Conversational User Interfaces (CUI 2026) took place in Bremen. The theme of this year’s conference was “Conversational AI: Agency and Identities!” Laura Spillner and Johanna Rockstroh from Project P2 “Interfaces” served as local chairs on the organizing committee and presented their ongoing research there.

Laura Spillner’s article, titled “Linguistic Uncertainty Markers for Trust Calibration in AI-Assisted Decision-Making,” examined how the use of hedges can be used to specifically calibrate users’ trust in order to avoid uncritical trust in the recommendations of AI systems while simultaneously fostering an appropriate level of trust.

In her article “Same, Same But Different? A Cross-Domain Analysis of Chatbot User Interfaces,” Johanna Rockstroh presented the results of a comparative analysis of chatbot interfaces in the fields of education, healthcare, social support, and open-ended dialogue systems such as ChatGPT.

The event explored various perspectives on how communicative AI design can influence both the future use of this technology and the users themselves. In addition to articles, position papers, posters, and demos were also presented.
