On 21 July, the half-day workshop „ADAPTIC: Adapting Dialog and Pragmatic Traits in Context” took place at the ACM Conversational User Interfaces conference (CUI 2026) in Bremen. It was organised and run by our ComAI colleagues Laura Spillner, Johanna Rockstroh, Paula Goerke, Jule Jensen and Jonah Wermter, with contributions from Sara Skardelly, Leonie Winterpacht, Nima Zargham and Rainer Malaka.

The workshop addressed a central question: how can CUIs move beyond merely mimicking human pragmatic cues, such as tone of voice, backchanneling, or conversational repair, toward a strategic, context- and domain-specific use of these cues? Bringing together perspectives from HCI, psycholinguistics, and the social sciences, participants explored this across the domains of journalism, health and care, and education.

The keynote was given by Prof. Wiebke Loosen (Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut), titled „Appropriating Communicative AI: Agency, Identity, and the Interface That Speaks About Itself”, introducing the concept of appropriation as a foundation for the discussions that followed.

The participants’ accepted position papers and further information are available on the workshop website: l-spillner.github.io/adaptic26
