Andrea Heisse and Marvin Waibel (P7) present at the 8th Weizenbaum Conference
On the 10th and 11th of June the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society is organizing the 8th annual Weizenbaum Conference in Berlin. Named after AI pioneer Joseph Weizenbaum, it convenes research from various disciplines on the societal impacts of digitalisation, featuring transdisciplinary discussions.
This year’s conference focuses on the topic of Generative AI (GenAI) and Society. Andrea Heisse and Marvin Waibel from the ComAI research project P7 “Personal Sphere” conducted at the University of Vienna will present on “Communicative competence in the age of ComAI: The case of bereavement support” on June 10 in Session 1 “Shifting Epistemic Authority”.
The presentation explores the intersection of interpersonal and AI-based bereavement support. Drawing on empirical data from discourse analysis and ethnographic fieldwork, Andrea Heisse and Marvin Waibel analyse the relationship between conventional bereavement support and tech solutions, focusing on how AI developers envision good bereavement support, build on or neglect established communicative practices, and how conventional services adapt to transforming grieving practices.
The 8th Weizenbaum Conference will take place on June 10–11, 2026 at bUm – Raum für soziales Miteinander, Paul-Lincke-Ufer 21, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, 10999 Berlin.
Heisse and Waibel will present on Day 1 (June 10th) during Session 1 from 13.15 to 14.45.
