Marvin Waibel presents at the “Work-in-Progress” workshop of the Working Group ‘Digital Sociology’ of the International Sociological Association
The Working Group on Digital Sociology of the International Sociological Association held its third “Work-in-Progress” workshop on March 18–19, 2026. The workshop offered the opportunity to present draft articles and engage in text-based discussions. ComAI member Marvin Waibel presented his manuscript, “AI Companions and the Communicative Construction of Agency.” The talk emphasized the need to systematically analyze how societal and individual processes of negotiation transform AI companions from technological artifacts into communicative partners endowed with epistemic authority and capable of influencing human action. It put forward a socio-theoretical proposal to conceptualize emerging forms of agency in hybrid relationships, and showed how this conceptualization can be operationalized in empirical research.
