ComAI Sub-Project on AI Companions Featured at Two International Conferences

The ComAI sub-project “Everyday Life and Communicative AI Companionship” (P7) will be represented at two international conferences in July 2025. Marvin Waibel, Andrea Heisse, and Michaela Pfadenhauer will present their methodological and empirical work on AI-based companions.
The project explores how forms of digital companionship are being reshaped by artificial intelligence – particularly at the intersection of everyday interaction, self-perception, and the researcher’s role. The team develops creative, experimental approaches in which researchers themselves interact with AI companions and embed these experiences within a reflexive methodological framework. Their goal is to advance digital and autoethnographic methods in the study of communicative AI.
The project’s findings will be presented at:
- the #YouthMediaLife Closing Symposium on “Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Critical Media Literacy”, held on 8 July 2025 at the University of Vienna;
- and the Annual Conference of the European Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction (EU SSSI) on “Symbolic Interactionism and Creative Processes in Turbulent Times”, taking place on 14 July 2025 at Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.
